Is Your Site Mobi?

I'm not talking about this guy. Or even this guy. I want to know if your website is mobile ready...because just over the horizon is whole new crop of smartphones, applications and open frameworks. And that's just in the U.S. Overseas, mobile culture is much more sophisticated, and users are increasingly relying on their cellular devices to get and share information.

Facebook and Flickr have already made the leap. (In fact, anyone in the U.S. with certain BlackBerry phones will have already noticed that, like it or not, a new Facebook icon popped up in your applications folder.) March Madness is underway soon, and college basketball enthusiasts will be able to access a mobile version of FoxSports.com to get the play-by-play. Are you in LA? Check out this mobi-map system to help you get through the metro. Hell, even Consumer Reports has a mobile web for shoppers on the go.

It all comes down to platform. Chances are good that if you/ your company has an RSS-enabled website, you already have content. Why not repurpose what you're already doing for multiple channels?

And yes, since you asked, there's money to be made on a mobi site. Hits are hits, and you can still count mobi visitors as traffic. You can't realistically place banner ads at the bottom of a tiny page, but you can sell that space as an ad link. What about offering it up as a coupon? There are some phones now that can even display recognizable bar codes that work with scanners...
