Is Your Site Mobi?
Facebook and Flickr have already made the leap. (In fact, anyone in the U.S. with certain BlackBerry phones will have already noticed that, like it or not, a new Facebook icon popped up in your applications folder.) March Madness is underway soon, and college basketball enthusiasts will be able to access a mobile version of FoxSports.com to get the play-by-play. Are you in LA? Check out this mobi-map system to help you get through the metro. Hell, even Consumer Reports has a mobile web for shoppers on the go.
It all comes down to platform. Chances are good that if you/ your company has an RSS-enabled website, you already have content. Why not repurpose what you're already doing for multiple channels?
And yes, since you asked, there's money to be made on a mobi site. Hits are hits, and you can still count mobi visitors as traffic. You can't realistically place banner ads at the bottom of a tiny page, but you can sell that space as an ad link. What about offering it up as a coupon? There are some phones now that can even display recognizable bar codes that work with scanners...
